Racism- the act of discriminating other folks based on race; has existed throughout human history and will continue to exist as long as persons subjectively observe races while real types of people. As a result I would like to discuss the issue of racism in Singapore.

Singapore is known for its multi-racial society. Persons around the world will be amazed at just how our different events have been capable to coexist and live collectively in tranquility. But there is certainly more than fulfills the eye. Though there usually are outwardly movement of dissatisfaction amongst the diverse races, Singaporeans do practice racial biasness, more often than not with out themselves actually realising it.

For this matter, I would like to speak about the news associated with an assistant movie director that was fired for her racist feedback.

According to the article, NTUC associate director, Amy Cheong, was sacked after she submitted offensive comments online. The lady put up a public status on her personal Facebook schedule, complaining about a Malay wedding ceremony that was being held at a void deck around her house.

In her status, she related Malay marriages to excessive divorce rates, and asked how culture could “allow people to marry for 50 bucks, peppering with vulgarities. She also allegedly wrote, “Void deck wedding events should be prohibited. If you can’t manage a proper wedding ceremony then you shouldn’t be getting married. Cheong’s Facebook or myspace account provides since been deactivated, and she has apologised publicly. Nevertheless , her post has started a mad backlash through the citizens.

The explanation for Amy Cheong posting the racist feedback on her Facebook . com is due to her prejudice toward the Malays. According to the Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, Prejudice is known as a product of labelling and perception. These labels create selective understanding of others, and overpower with emotion although blocking out logical thoughts. As a result, self-fulfilling stereotypes are created. Using this, “she related Malay weddings to excessive divorce prices, and asked how world could enable people to marry for 55 bucks and “Void deck weddings should be banned. If you can’t afford an appropriate wedding then you definitely shouldn’t be receiving married, Amy Cheong labels the Malays as lowly and that all their weddings are substandard. Consequently, we could inform that she’s prejudiced towards Malays.

Misjudgment and Splendour tend to come together. The presence of one particular often alerts the existence of the other. For instance, complaints just like “dirty, smelly Bangladeshis are often heard from Singaporeans who use public travel. The influx of international workers to Singapore might have ended in strong sentiment by the local people against the staff, subsequently causing discrimination to these staff by the locals.

The Functionalist view claims that bias serves a function by creating in-group solidarity. It also says that prejudice creates a prevalent enemy and serves to define discriminated groups because dysfunctional. In this case, Singaporeans, on the whole, form a great in-group unanimity by ostracising the Bangladeshis and regarding them as dysfunctional because they are “dirty and “smelly. Consequently , the Functionalist view shows how a ethnic group can be discriminated by simply others.
