The J-Curve Theory Essay

James C. Davies (1962), a college student studying the main causes of innovation, developed the J-Curve theory. The latter is definitely the illustration of his hypothesis that “revolutions are likely to occur when a prolonged period of objective economic and social creation is and then a short period of sharp reversal” (Mason, 2004).

Simply put, a prolonged period of social and financial development improves people’s expectations of material well being. When a turmoil such as a war brings about a clear , crisp reversal in the level of achievement, popular anticipations do not conform to the latter. The gap between expectations and achievement may widen to the point that frustration, and, later, violence will ensue. When aggravation is distributed by the members of a given society, hostility will manifest itself through collective violence (Mason, 2004). Hostility, however , crystallizes into wave (Mason, 2004) when aggravation is described towards the govt.

Shared frustration over the government’s inability to reverse declining levels of pleasure brings about a politicized form of aggression. This politicized sort of aggression is no other than wave. But one particular limitation from the J-Curve theory is that it operates for the idealistic assumption that the federal government has the capacity to maintain the increasing expectations of its people (Glantz, 2006). In reality, simply no government can easily ever do that.

Furthermore, a decline in the achievements from the government could also fast the people to expect less from it. The which displays the limitation of the J-Curve theory is a War on Fear. Following 9/11, the American public was constantly inundated with advancements such as the Homeland Security Take action and the application of soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq.

In the process, that they expected the Bush program to win its battle with Saddam Hussein and the Al-Qaeda. But the American government after started to get alerts regarding possible terrorist attacks on shopping malls, airports, hospitals, etc . As a result, those finally acknowledged that while the is winning the War on Terror, the victory is definitely not as quickly as they anticipated. References Glantz, M. L. Fragilecologies.
